CAMPUS MINISTRY
Every student here is deeply loved by God.
Our job in Campus Ministry is to make sure he knows it — through the sacraments, through four years of retreats, and through service that puts him in front of people who need him.
Today's prime educational objective must be to form men-for-others… men who cannot even conceive of love of God which does not include love for the least of their neighbors; men completely convinced that love of God which does not issue injustice is a farce .
Pedro Arrupe, S.J.
RETREATS
Four years, four retreats, forever changed.
Retreats are not an extra here. Every student goes on one every year — away from the routine, away from the phone, long enough for something to actually happen.
9
Freshman Retreat
A night on campus as a class, early enough in the year that a freshman learns the names of the men he will graduate with.
10
Sophomore Retreat
A day away filled with activities, with a focus on resilience, brotherhood, and being men for others.
11
Kairos
Four days, and the retreat our alumni talk about years later. Kairos is Greek for the right moment — the time when students are forever changed.
12
Senior Retreat
Three days to discern for the next stage of his life — the last time this class will be together before they graduate.

LITURGY
A diverse community that welcomes all faiths and celebrates our Catholic tradition.
Not every student here is Catholic, and no one is asked to pretend otherwise. What we ask is that everyone comes and participates. A family that prays together, stays together.
- All-school liturgies at least once a month through the academic year, plus Holy Days of Obligation that fall while school is in session.
- Reconciliation offered periodically, and during Advent and Lent.
- Confirmation preparation happens through your parish. We will help your family find a program and we encourage every student to take part.
- Liturgies are planned by students — Campus Ministry works with JEDIS (Jesuit Educated Disciples in Service) to prepare each Mass, from the readings to the music.
CHRISTIAN SERVICE
Set the world on fire.
Our students visit elderly residents, tutor younger kids, and serve in soup lines. Service at Verbum Dei is built on three pillars, and it is a graduation requirement — not because we think you can require conversion, but because you can require a young man to show up until he understands why he came.
Solidarity
Standing with people rather than above them — service as accompaniment, not charity
Sustainability
Care for the world we have been given, and for the neighborhood we are part of.
Spirituality
Reflection on what the work meant, so that service forms the server as well as serving the served
The requirement
Students complete 10 hours of service each year, logged online with a written reflection on each placement. Hours can be earned on a Verbum Dei service trip or through a placement a student finds himself.
Where our students serve
Visiting elderly residents, tutoring younger students, cleaning up the beach, and serving in soup lines.
JEDIS
Jesuit Educated Disciples in Service.
JEDIS is a leadership group of selected juniors and seniors who model servant leadership and a desire to grow in faith and character. They plan the liturgies, lead retreats, and set the tone for everyone behind them.
If a student is selected to be a JEDI, he will take a specific theology class to develop his leadership skills.
