“Why do less, when I can do more?” – Diego Canchola

Happy New Year! I hope this finds you well and filled with the warmth of the holiday season and time spent with loved ones. A new year brings the hope of new beginnings and the potential of the future. This same potential is what we see in every young man at Verbum Dei Jesuit, and we are grateful to have you in the community of supporters who are helping them steward that potential into a brighter future.

I want to share about Diego Canchola, a shining star at Verbum Dei Jesuit with a bright future ahead thanks to the generosity of donors like you. Diego is a junior with a 4.2 GPA, a cross-country team member, and a deep love for science. Last summer, inspired by his parents, who both worked in healthcare in Mexico, Diego participated in the MLK Community Healthcare Fellows Program. The program is an internship and mentorship program for South Los Angeles high school students that provides exposure to careers in healthcare by pairing fellows with experts and mentors currently working in health. Students in the program can observe doctors and nurses, conduct clinical research, and strengthen their career development skills.

Diego’s work with the program was recently featured in The Dream Show 2024, an annual celebration highlighting individuals from across South Los Angeles who inspire change through hope, healing, and purpose. As part of the celebration, a camera crew shadowed Diego for a day, including a class at Verbum Dei and cross-country practice, to tell his story. We hope you will join us in celebrating this accomplishment and take a moment to watch his segment on the MLK Community Healthcare YouTube channel.

We are proud of Diego and excited about what the future holds for him and all our young men. Your continued belief in our students and their potential not only motivates them but inspires us all to be servants with and for others, and we are grateful for your support.

I hope you will join us on campus this Spring for an event or service to see the impact of your generosity in person.
